If you have never been to Colorado Springs, Co., it is a great vacation spot. You can drive or ride a rail train to the top of Pikes Peak. You can visit the zoo, go to Seven Falls, Garden of the Gods. All of these things are just about in a ten mile radius from each other. Denver is only a few miles away as well as the Royal Gorge. AND… it is relatively inexpensive. My family and I have been to several vacation sites. We been back to Colorado Springs twice. Have a great time no matter where you go…and enjoy your family while their young.
Well, how about Europe? More specifially Turkey?
You live in Florida, so you got access to the charter carrier LTU. They are the cheapest way to get to Europe from southeastern USA, especially if you book the flight last minute.

From Germany it is very cheap to get to Turkey. Booked about 4-5 months in advance, flights start from 19 EUR one-way.

Turkey is definetely someting away from the U.S. Get the Lonely Planet guide book for Turkey to get you an idea on what to watch out for and on how to organise a trip.
Turkey in itself is a very inexpensive country, a single person can travel on 40 USD per day there easily. As a family, I expect you to need about 100-120 USD per day in Turkey. Your main expense would be hotel costs and food.
Alternatively I could recommend going to Egypt. If you book Egypt as a travel package, it is very expensive. But with a decent guidebook like Lonely Planet, Rough Guide or Let’s Go, Egypt is very easy and very cheap to do on your own. If you go for two weeks, you can snorkle and swim in the Red Sea, see Abu Simbel and Luxor, sail down the Nile from Aswan to Luxor on a Felucca, see the Pyramids and have the muezzin wake you up on to a Cairo morning of shopping at Hussayn Square. You wrote that “museum holidays” are not for you – well, in Egypt all “museums” are outdoors and require climbing up a mountain or crawling down into a cave.
Why go to a Egytian styled theme park when you can have the real thing?
For Egypt, you’ll need about 100-150 USD for your whole family per day. For 14 days, that is about 2000 USD plus costs of flight tickets to Egypt. Main cost will be entry fees to sights.
