Get some felt and glue and google eyes and let them make koalas?
Tie snakes are good too, just have them stuff an old tie with batting/stuffing and glue on eyes.
I am teaching all ages from 3 to 12, the VBS theme “Boomerang Express” I ordered a cute necklace kit from Oriental Trading. They will also make “walk about sticks” using 3 foot lengths ( different lengths for different ages) of PVC pipe that I have already spot spray painted, they will add themed pony beads each night they attend to the hole that my husband drilled in one end of the pipe. Use rex lace cord to thread the beads on.
This group will also make “Didgeridoos” , a wind musical instrument made from a paper towel roll. I cut 3 strips of contact paper that looks like wood and in-between the strips, the kids will color stripes to fill the gaps not covered by the contact paper.
Snap a photo of the kids and make a foam picture frame and purchase or draw fun foam Australian shapes and glue to the picture frame.
Oriental Trading also has these kits available and they are great about shipping on time. This same company has cardboard fans with a Kola bear on them that the kids can color.
You also can do a Yahoo search for newspaper hats and make the Australian hat for the kids.
Dltk-kids website has a cute paper train you can make. “Jesus keeps me on track”. This ties into the Theme for the VBS.
Another idea is to make a brown paper bag vest for the kids using grocery bags. I do not have the pattern for that but you can do a Yahoo search Just enter “How to make a paper-bag vest”
